Why Japan Should Be on Your Travel List: A Guide to Custom, Luxury Travel in Japan

Planning a trip to Japan? You’re not alone. Japan continues to be one of the most sought-after destinations for luxury travelers, and it’s easy to see why.

Last year, I had the opportunity to explore Japan firsthand, visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, and Hakone. I went in the summer. It was hot and humid, but still an unforgettable experience. Japan is a country that engages all the senses. From tranquil gardens and beautifully plated kaiseki meals to the seamless blend of ancient tradition and cutting-edge design, every detail feels considered and intentional.

One of my most memorable moments happened in Kyoto. Years ago, when I lived in New York, Takashimaya, the elegant Japanese department store, was one of my clients. This time, I found myself shopping in their Kyoto store as a guest. It was a reminder of how much I’ve always admired Japanese craftsmanship, culture, and hospitality.

As a luxury travel advisor, I design custom Japan itineraries for a wide range of travelers, including honeymooners, couples, families, and multi-generational groups. No two trips are ever the same because no two travelers are.

Here are just a few ways to experience Japan:

  • Skiing in Hokkaido

  • Relaxing at luxury beach resorts like those in Okinawa

  • Soaking in an onsen in Hakone surrounded by nature

  • Exploring the art, architecture, and design of Tokyo

  • Taking part in tea ceremonies, craft workshops, and cultural traditions passed down for generations in Kyoto

  • Diving into Tokyo’s food scene, with over 130,000 restaurants ranging from ramen stalls to Michelin-starred gems

Japan is beautiful year-round. Spring brings cherry blossoms, autumn bursts with color, and both summer and winter offer their own unique charm. If you're wondering when the best time to visit Japan is, the answer depends on your travel style and goals. That’s where I come in.

Planning luxury travel to Japan takes time, thought, and insider knowledge. There is still availability for 2025, and I’m actively designing trips into 2026. If Japan is on your list, I’d love to help you create something meaningful, immersive, and entirely your own.
